What exactly is locum tenens?
Locum tenens definition: It is Latin meaning "to hold the place of". More specifically, locum tenens is the placement of qualified physicians into temporary job opportunities.
What are some of the reasons to be a locum tenens physician?
- You have recently completed training and are exploring different clinical settings.
- Early retirement from full time practice.
- As a transition period during a change in career direction.
- Freedom from the burdens brought about by high malpractice fees, high overhead, administrative hassles and hospital politics.
- Flexibility to travel and establish the lifestyle outside of medicine that you desire.
- Controlling where and when you practice.
- Practicing where you are needed and appreciated.
- Practicing the type of medicine you want in the way that you want.
What kind of time commitment is involved?
As a locum tenens physician, you have the flexibility to practice as much as you desire. The typical assignment can be from 1 week to 6 months or longer with the opportunity to work in as many areas of the country as you desire. You have control over acceptance on each assignment.
Many of your colleagues have found that being a full-time locum tenens physician affords them freedom, financial security, a professional challenge and a lifestyle found no place else in medicine.
What costs or commitments are needed by the physician?
You accept only those assignments that you want for the time that you want. You are under no obligation to work any minimum amount of time. There are no recruitment fees.

May I bring my family with me?
Yes, they are welcome and you are sometimes encouraged to bring your family on assignment (we must be notified in advance). In many cases, the lodging supplied is condo style and would be appropriate for a family. You would, of course, be responsible for your family’s travel and additional lodging expenses, if applicable.
